GPT-4o Series & the Microsoft Foundry Platform

🚀 Azure AI Foundry Architecture & Agent Service 9 min 80 BASE XP

GPT-4o Reaches General Availability

Microsoft made OpenAI's GPT-4o series generally available in Microsoft Foundry (the current name for Azure AI Foundry), alongside general availability of the Asia-Pacific Data Zone and production-ready updates to Foundry Agent Service.

Three Models, Three Workloads

ModelBest For
GPT-4o SolAdvanced reasoning - extended reasoning, agentic workflows, and code-focused scenarios for demanding enterprise workloads
GPT-4o TerraBalanced everyday work - performance competitive with OpenAI o1 at a lower cost
GPT-4o LunaFastest and most affordable - high-volume, latency-sensitive workloads

GPT-4o Pricing (Standard Global, short context, per million tokens)

ModelInputCached InputCached WritesOutput
GPT-4o Sol$5.00$0.50$6.25$30.00
GPT-4o Terra$2.00$0.20$2.50$12.00
GPT-4o Luna$0.20$0.02$0.25$1.20

GPT-4o is available from day one through Global Standard, Global Priority Processing, Data Zones Standard, and Global Provisioned deployment types, across all 28 existing Foundry regions.

Asia-Pacific Data Zone (GA)

Microsoft also announced general availability of the Asia-Pacific (APAC) Data Zone, letting APAC customers run frontier OpenAI models while keeping data processing within the region - joining the existing US and EU Data Zones.

💡 Key Insight: Choose the GPT-4o tier by cost sensitivity, not just capability - Terra matches OpenAI o1-class quality for everyday workloads at a fraction of Sol's cost, reserving Sol for tasks that genuinely need its deeper reasoning.
